Designer Tip :: Area Rug Placement

Designer Tip :: Area Rug Placement

Rugs serve a myriad of purposes in a room -- they add warmth and texture, delineate different zones, ground furniture groupings and provide contrast to flooring.  Rugs really are the foundation of any room and shouldn’t be considered an isolated item.  Choosing the right size rug is super important -- a too-small rug can make your room look smaller!

Sound Like a Designer :: Greek Key

Sound Like a Designer :: Greek Key

The motif originated in Ancient Greece {thus the name, duh} and is an interlocking rectangular pattern made from one continuous line, also known as a “meander.”  One theory is that the motif is a representation of the mythical labyrinth that held the fearsome Minotaur, a creature with the head of a bull and the body of a man. The motif is also thought to represent unity and infinity.  In Ancient Greece the  pattern was featured on architectural friezes, pottery and bronze shields.  The pattern was later adopted by the Romans {as so much of Greek art and architecture was} and was seen on tiles, mosaics as well as architecture and later became an important element of the Neoclassical Style.

Girl Crush :: Aerin Lauder

Girl Crush :: Aerin Lauder

Ok, so I’ve had a girl-crush on Aerin Lauder for, like, ever.  My girl-crush dates all the way back to my Chapin days in NYC -- she was one of the cool, older girls that that I admired from afar because I was way too uncool and awkward to do anything else.  Here are some images from her drop-dead gorgeous apartment in NYC.  Pardon me while I wipe the drool off of my keyboard.

Color Love :: Gray + Yellow

Color Love :: Gray + Yellow

Gray and yellow is one of my favorite color combinations and it works in any style of decor, from the ultra-modern to the very traditional.  It was very trendy a couple of years ago, but I don’t really go in for trends -- if you like it, you like it, period.  Gray is timeless and can be mixed with any color. It can help tone down the stimulating effects of yellow and keep it from becoming garish.  The color combo works great in just about any room of the house too!

Luxe Touch :: Upholstered Walls

Luxe Touch :: Upholstered Walls

Usually when someone says “padded room” you automatically think “insane asylum,” but that’s not always the case.  Like, for example, when you are talking about upholstered walls.  I was first introduced to upholstered walls when I visited the Paris apartment of a woman named Zou-Zou, whom I considered my French grandmother.  She was incredibly chic as was her apartment -- the walls of her foyer were upholstered in grey patent leather!  I tried to take pictures once, but they just didn't do the walls justice.

The Incredibly Versatile IKEA Billy Bookcase

The Incredibly Versatile IKEA Billy Bookcase

I have to confess :: I have a serious book-buying habit.  I love books, and a full (well-styled, of course) bookcase is tremendously satisfying. Books are their own form of décor, they add color, texture and personality to a room.  Unfortunately, the bookshelves I have just aren’t cutting it.
