The Barcelona chair was designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe along with his paramour Lilly Reich for the German Pavilion at the 1929 International Exposition in, you guessed it, Barcelona, Spain.  The fair organizers planned an opening reception in the German Pavilion and wanted to provide two chairs for the King and Queen of Spain and asked Mies van der Rohe to design them, thus the birth of the iconic chair.

IKEA is finally bringing some of their newer collection to the US, and Nornäs is one of the seven coming soon to your local IKEA {I believe they will be available in February of this year.}  Nornäs is contructed of solid Swedish Pine from sourced from sustainable forests in northern Sweden; the collection is also designed to minimize waste during construction.
