Designer Crush :: Jean-Louis Deniot

My latest designer crush is Parisian designer Jean-Louis Deniot -- he’s kind of a dish, right?  But no, I’m not only crushing on him because he’s quite the handsome specimen, I’m totally swoony over his designs too!

Deniot attended l'École Camondo in Paris, one of the most prestigious interior design schools in the world {oh to study design in Paris!  Philippe Starck and Jacques Grange are also famous alumni of l’École Camondo}  He graduated in 2000, the same year he launched Cabinet Jean-Louis Deniot and has been creating beautiful interiors around the world ever since. About 75% of his work is abroad, often for repeat clients.  He calls his style “French Chic,” which is a mix of antiques, vintage and bespoke pieces and a combination of French style and American comfort.

... a sofa from the 1960s or 70s will have so much more personality than one that is produced today. If you design only with new additions, a space will never have depth.

 He was included on the AD100 in 2014 and released a monograph of his work with Rizzoli the same year {which is totally on my list of books to buy ASAP.}  In addition to his monograph, he produced a furniture and lighting line with Jean de Merry, an LA-based showroom and collaborated with famed British furniture company George S. Smith on a collection of furniture.

He is inspired by buildings that possess a strong personality and ones where there is an “osmosis and integrity between exterior architecture and interior decoration.”

The building that has taught me the most is actually an entire city: Pompeii. It’s large gardens, grand architecture with open atriums, the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces, the sense of privacy, the way natural light shines in. The whole city was in tune with all the elements, which to me corresponds to the ideal way of life.

I couldn’t agree more on how inspiring Pompeii is -- I studied it’s architecture in school and it inspired many of my projects!  I can spend hours wandering around the Getty Villa in Malibu.  If you haven’t visited, I highly recommend it {followed by a trip to the Getty Center to look at all their fab French antiques on display!}

Other buildings that inspire Deniot include the Pantheon in Rome, la Légion d’Honneur in Paris, Hopeton House in Scotland, the Communist Party HQ in Paris, anything by Adolf Loos in Vienna and American skyscrapers.

He often references the Neoclassical style in his designs as well as 20th century designers like Jean-Michel Frank.  His favorite colors are “French” colors, meaning a color with a touch of grey.

I always want to get as far as possible from the white box. My interiors are about atmosphere, character, texture and a sense of harmony.

My style is full of history and references coming from many different periods. I like emblematic interiors, full of archetypical furniture which one could consider ‘new,’ or ‘cool’ classical. This ranges from Neoclassical to the 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, etc. The decors [sic] are never literal or featuring typical period rooms, but eclectic and very architectural with mixed influences and always focusing on the highest level of quality possible. I don’t do pure contemporary, as to me, it has no soul. I need to have history in my work!

I’ve collected some{okay, more than some -- I couldn't narrow down all the pictures -- they're too fabulous!} images of his work so you can see why I am totally enchanted by his designs and can’t wait to see what he is going to do next!

I love how he used a room divider inset with mirrors to define the living room.

How about these hammered brass cabinets in Deniot's own kitchen in Paris?!  They might make me want to spend more time in the kitchen.  Maybe.

This bedroom from Deniot's project in New Delhi has a distinct 1940s Art Deco vibe to it.

I love the two folding screens that flank the entrance to the living room -- for more on decorating with folding screens, read my post here.

This room is in Deniot's offices in Paris.  The fake wall hides clients' private files.  Such a cool idea!  Who doesn't love a fake wall/door?

Another room in Deniot's Parisian office.  I'm in love with all the Neoclassical detail he incorporates in a lot of his designs.

Jean-Louis Deniot likes to create niches for sofas in his designs, as seen below.  It definitely ups the cozy factor and makes the sofa a focal point.

The trellises on the walls and ceiling are very reminiscent of decorator Elsie de Wolfe.  Click here to learn more about this doyenne of decoration.

Deniot uses a lot of creative wallcoverings/treatments in his designs, as seen in the below dining room.  The case displays the owner's collection of Czech glass.  For more on displaying collections, click here.

Did you notice how the pattern on the ceiling echoes the pattern on the rug?  And how amazing are the shagreen arm chairs?  At least I think that's shagreen....
