Go Wild :: Decorating with Animal Prints

Animal prints never seem to really go out of style.  They are incredibly versatile and work with pretty much any style of décor.  Animal prints can bring on the drama, but, amazingly enough, animal prints can be fairly neutral too when paired with other neutrals like browns and creams. Leopard and zebra are two of the most popular animal prints, but you can also find giraffe, cheetah and antelope in the mix too.

Who can forget Carole Radziwill’s {of the Real Housewives of New York, c’mon admit it, you totally watch the show} amazing tiger print couch!?  It was a gift from her mother-in-law, socialite Lee Radziwill, and is covered in Scalamandré’s le Tigre fabric

Rugs are a great way to incorporate animal print into your décor -- if you’re a little gun shy and don’t want to commit to fulll-on wall-to-wall carpet you can opt for an area rug instead. A bolder move is animal print wallpaper -- you can find bold and more subtle patterns out there.  Again, if you aren’t ready to make a total commitment, try putting it in a powder bath {read more on daring powder bath designs here}.  Upholstering furniture in animal print is another way to incorporate it into your design. An inexpensive way to bring the wild into a room is via throw pillows -- they are also less of a commitment than upholstery, rugs or wallpaper.  Whether or not the animal print items become the focal point of the room depends on scale and color.

Large-scale animal print makes a big impact -- to keep the room from looking overly busy, use solids with a lot of texture {learn more about the importance of texture in interior design here.}  Animal print will also bring in some visual texture in a monochromatic design scheme {read my post on monochromatic design here.} Believe it or not you can mix animal prints!  The trick is to unite them through color and mix the scale of the patterns up a bit.  For example, pair a large-scale zebra print with a smaller-scale leopard or cheetah.

Animal prints aren’t limited to looking like they do in the wild… there are lots of colorful options to choose from too!

Now get out there and go wild {no pun intended}!

The antelope-patterned rug in Nicole Hanley Mellon's apartment is a great example of how an animal print can be a neutral.
