Pantone's Color of the Year for 2015 is.... Marsala!

So Pantone announced their Color of the Year for 2015 the other day as Marsala and I’m really torn about how I feel about the shade.  Marsala is a real departure from the bright, happy shades selected in previous years, it actually reminds me of the shade of lipstick I wore in the early 90s <shudder>.

Pantone suggests that the color is best displayed in various textures.  For example a matte texture highlights Marsala’s organic nature, while glossy finishes add a touch of glamour and luxury.

This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing and translates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors.

As for color palettes, Pantone supplied some suggested palettes to inspire you.  I like 2, 3, and 5 the best.  1, 4, 6, and 7 are just yucky.  Kravet has pulled together a line of fabric in the Masala range to inspire you as well.  You can see their offerings here.

Marsala will work well in both traditional and transitional designs -- the important thing to remember is that you don’t have to make a commitment as big as painting an entire room Marsala, you can bring it in in small doses via accessories, the next step up would be window treatments, upholstered furniture or rugs.  Persian or Oriental carpets regularly make use of colors that are close to Pantone's Marsala.

Marsala has received some mixed reviews… some say it reminds them of rust {like icky rust that you see in decrepit structures} or even dried blood!  I wouldn’t go as far as dried blood, but I do find it a little mauve-y for my taste {at least it looks that way in the photos of swatches I've seen, but computer monitors are notoriously bad at not displaying colors as they truly are.}  I think I could make it work in small doses -- I definitely wouldn’t use it as a primary color in a color scheme for an interior.
